Imagine the history of the American west as if magic, magical creatures, and magicians were a normal part of everyday life, and you will get an idea of what's in store in the first book of Patricia Wrede's Frontier Magic series. The story is narrated in first person by a young girl Eff, the thirteenth child in a family of magicians living in Mill City on the edge of the frontier, where just across the river new settlements have to contend with an uncharted wilderness (the Lewis and Clark expedition went missing in 1804) populated with steam dragons, mammoths, greatwolves, and woolly rhinoceroses. As the thirteenth child, Eff, spurred by closed-minded people in the community, believes she is bad luck. and, just as the settlers on the frontier are creating a new nation against great odds, Eff battles self-doubt and social stigma, finding the true power of her magic. |
