Reading in Winter

Reading in winter feels very different then reading in summer. Curling up to read in your most comfortable chair, with fuzzy socks, a big blanket, and a cup of your beverage of choice as day turns quickly to evening feels like the best possible pastime during the cold months.

But what to read? We know what makes a great Beach Read, but what makes a great cold weather book?

In this booklist we’ll try to answer that question, and recommend some great, wintery books along the way!

Books We're Grateful For

There have been a number of books that have come into my life at the exact right moment over the years. Some of them have given me perspective I needed, or held my hand through uncomfortable transitions. I think many book lovers can relate to the relief of finding a book that reflects or illuminates exactly what one needs to see, and when that happens I for one am so grateful.

Given the impending holiday, I asked Third Place booksellers what books they feel especially grateful for this season.

Our Top 10 Books of 2022

It’s that time of year again! We asked everyone at all three Third Place Books locations for their 10 favorite books that came out in 2022, collected the hundreds of books we loved this year, and compiled the ten books that appeared on the most lists.

So without further ado, here are the top ten books that Third Place Booksellers loved in 2022:

Quick Recommendations: Spook Season!

Spook season is almost over, which means, for those of us who love to terrify ourselves, it’s time to dig deep and find the scariest books we can stand. To that end, I asked three booksellers to recommend, in a single sentence, a book that really spooked them.

A Touch of Death

In any movie or tv show where the main character receives a tarot reading, the final card is consistently and inevitably the Death card. Followed by a musical sting, the eyes of the offensive Romani/oracle stereotype widen as they warn our lead character to "turn back now! Flee this place! Only Death awaits you on this path." As one who reads tarot, this scene is maddening every. single. time.

Read Aloud Favorites!

One of our favorite requests in the kids section is for exciting, engaging illustrated books to read to young kids. So here’s a quick list of some of my favorite read aloud books that will have the kids laughing along – and will maybe make adults laugh as well.

The Romance Primer by Third Place Books’ Radical Romance Book Club

In February of this year, we launched a new Radical Romance book club as a place to read and celebrate romance books with representation. Seasoned romance readers and those new to the genre alike have dropped in on the second Monday of every month to talk about our selections.

We asked the group to talk about our favorite romance reads of all time – here are some highlights:

Swoon with Us

At the Black Ink Book Festival, bestselling romance author Beverly Jenkins commented on the rise of the genre and its broadening representation: "The crumbs of before have become a banquet."

The Sealey Challenge

August is right around the corner and what better way to spend it than by reading a poetry collection every single day? That’s right, 31 poetry books in one month. Nicole Sealey, poet, professor, and the namesake, in 2017, invented the seemingly impossible -- but completely doable! -- challenge to read a book every single day for the whole month of August.

How can this be done?

RM of BTS's Reading Recommendations

You may have heard of BTS (or not! That’s okay too!). They are currently the biggest band in the world, all the way from South Korea. There are many reasons for their fame – incredible music, cool dance moves, and each of the 7 members have their own unique, shining personalities. One of these shining personalities is Kim Namjoon, also known as RM, BTS’s leader. Any BTS fan knows his love for songwriting, museums, and most importantly, BOOKS! In honor of his impeccable taste in books, here is a list of Namjoon’s recommendations to get you reading this summer!
