Our Top 10 Books of 2023

The year is nearly over already! But what were the best books that came out this year?

We asked everyone at all three Third Place Books locations for their 10 favorite books of 2023, and from the hundreds of fantastic books, compiled the ten that appeared on the most lists.

Our Top Ten Favorite Books of 2023

Nine Books for a Cozy Halloween

Halloween is my favorite holiday, and as much as I love to be terrified, even I have to admit there’s nothing quite like cuddling up to enjoy something autumnal, a little spooky, and unlikely to give me nightmares. So if you’re looking for a cozy Halloween, with some gentle spooks, and a lot of fun, here are some books for you!

Wrath Month

June's status as LGBTQ+ Pride Month grants us the coveted opportunity to celebrate queer literature of all kinds, but there’s also nothing wrong with focusing on books that share a particular tonal thread. After a slew of viral tweets in 2018 the month after Pride has jokingly been dubbed Wrath Month as a way to celebrate queer rage, something that is arguably the reason we have Pride Month at all in the first place.

Be Obsessive, Be Be Obsessive

Growing up I was fascinated by popular culture featuring obsession. The 2004 film Phantom of the Opera was viewed many times in my household. Helga’s obsession with Arnold in the Nickelodeon series Hey Arnold! was and is one of my favorite television plots. My cousin and I must have watched the 2009 masterpiece Obsessed starring Idris Elba, Beyoncé Knowles and Ali Larter (in which Ali Larter’s character is obsessed with Idris Elba’s character who is married to Beyoncé’s character) a dozen times. I was obsessed with obsession!

Earth Day

In honor of Earth Day, we collected some books about climate change, apocalypse, and saving the world.

Third Place Books 2022 Bestsellers

Happy New Year everyone! We made it through 2022, and if you’re anything like us, you’re very excited for all the books coming up in 2023. But before we get into the books on the horizon, we thought it would be fun to look back at 2022.

You already know all about our favorite books of the year, but what books did Third Place Books shoppers love this year? To answer that question, we dove into our records and made a list of the ten bestselling books that came out this year.

Reading in Winter

Reading in winter feels very different then reading in summer. Curling up to read in your most comfortable chair, with fuzzy socks, a big blanket, and a cup of your beverage of choice as day turns quickly to evening feels like the best possible pastime during the cold months.

But what to read? We know what makes a great Beach Read, but what makes a great cold weather book?

In this booklist we’ll try to answer that question, and recommend some great, wintery books along the way!

Books We're Grateful For

There have been a number of books that have come into my life at the exact right moment over the years. Some of them have given me perspective I needed, or held my hand through uncomfortable transitions. I think many book lovers can relate to the relief of finding a book that reflects or illuminates exactly what one needs to see, and when that happens I for one am so grateful.

Given the impending holiday, I asked Third Place booksellers what books they feel especially grateful for this season.

Quick Recommendations: Spook Season!

Spook season is almost over, which means, for those of us who love to terrify ourselves, it’s time to dig deep and find the scariest books we can stand. To that end, I asked three booksellers to recommend, in a single sentence, a book that really spooked them.
