Fifty Beasts to Break Your Heart: And Other Stories By GennaRose Nethercott Cover Image
ISBN: 9780593314180
Availability: On our shelves now at one or more of our stores
Published: Vintage - February 6th, 2024

I will likely be recommending all of Nethercott’s books; her blend of folklore, fantasy, and real life makes you question whether the monsters in these pages may exist in your own life. Her magical collection of short stories kept me curious (in the way one might be curious what that shadow is lurking on the other side of a foggy bog). Each monster is inspired by past lovers and partners, some more devious than others…but all with the capacity to eat break your heart.

Every Heart a Doorway (Wayward Children #1) By Seanan McGuire Cover Image
ISBN: 9780765385505
Availability: On our shelves now at one or more of our stores
Published: Tordotcom - April 5th, 2016

The Wayward Children series is dark, gruesome, twisty, fourth-wall-breaking magical fun. And it's easily my new favorite portal magic series. I usually can't stomach anything gruesome--however, reimagined fairy tales are my trope kryptonite. The prose is so crisp. The world building is creative, clever, and cruel. Strangely, this book is the evil mirror twin of TJ Klune's House in the Cerulean Sea: the children of the story are exactly as eager to find their own safe harbors, all those places known as "home".

Beautiful Darkness By Kerascoët, Fabien Vehlmann, Helge Dascher (Translated by) Cover Image

Published: Drawn and Quarterly - October 30th, 2018

Child logic and base ferality attempt to work together in this beautifully bleak fable. A group of fairies are forced to leave their previous 'home' and survive the wilderness. If you are looking for a sweet moral ribbon to tie around this tale, you wont find it. It is lost; buried in the woods amongst the maggots.

The Merry Spinster: Tales of Everyday Horror By Daniel M. Lavery Cover Image

Availability: On our shelves now at one or more of our stores
Published: Holt Paperbacks - March 13th, 2018

What if the Wind in the Willows was less of a warm-hearted tale about forest friends and more about a sinister plot to gaslight Mr. Toad? What if the Velveteen Rabbit was a cold-blooded sociopath intent on becoming Real, no matter the cost? The reimagined fairy tales in the Merry Spinster answer these questions and ones I didn't even know I had.
