While many of us may enjoy birding, I never thought that it could be a hot date! Then to pair such a meditative activity with extremely earnest characters, a delightful rendition of the fake date trope, and a spice level that triples in the last third of the book?? There's no way Birding with Benefits wasn't going to be my favorite romance of the year (and a great reference list for new hobbies)!

If a charming repressed polar explorer pulled out of his own timeline doesn't call me a horrid cat right now, I WILL DIE.

A masterpiece. Standing ovation. Maximum stars. There’s a bit of something for every reader in here: romance, time travel, arctic exploration, mixed-race representation, a scathing critique of British colonialism… okay those were all specifically for me, but I promise they will be for you too! A strong contender for best read of 2024 and something to feverishly text, phone, or write tear-stained letters to your friends about.

Portrait of a Scotsman (A League of Extraordinary Women #3) By Evie Dunmore Cover Image
$17.00

Published: Berkley - September 7th, 2021

Historical romance loses its fantasy element when I think too hard about the reality of the 1880s - the surplus of clothing layers and the lack of women's rights, the quickness in which you can get labeled a wanton or hysteric and sent away to a sanitarium. Sooty gas lighting? NO THANKS. However, Evie Dunmore got me good with this one. There's a discussion on Marx! Socialism! Suffragettes! Workers and unions! A grumpy Scotsman with big hands and a chipped tooth! For all of those wary historical romance babies, this one is for you.

A wonderful autumnal romp of a romcom! As someone who knows When Harry Met Sally... better than I know my closest friends and family, this is a very sweet, somewhat steamy, quite messy, and for lack of better word, fresh ode to Nora Ephron's masterpiece. Once again, men and women definitely can be friends, these two just can't be only friends.

At once a lovely little friends to enemies to friends to lovers, and a tender reckoning with grief, trauma, and prejudice. I love these characters and their friendships and their flaws and their growth. I wanted to eat every meal they ate, drink every cocktail they shared at their quasi-group-therapy-speakeasy-get-togethers, and just exist within the chaos and the calm. Hug your friends, tell your loved ones you love them, confess your feelings to your crush, trust your gut or heart or brain or whatever, go to therapy, and read this book (in no particular order). Thank you, Rachel, for sharing your words with us.
