Presbyterian minister John has broken off from the Scottish church.  He needs money and takes a job from a wealthy landowner to clear the only inhabitant off a remote Scottish Island. Ivar is the last of his family and his community to try and eke out a living on the island.  Forced together, the two men without common background or language forge a friendship.  Spare, beautiful and big hearted, this is one of my favorite books so far this year.

The Cemetery of Untold Stories: A Novel By Julia Alvarez Cover Image
$28.00
ISBN: 9781643753843
Availability: On our shelves now at one or more of our stores
Published: Algonquin Books - April 2nd, 2024

My sole gripe with this book is that the cemetery is not real and I cannot go visit. Although I'd of course still need a good enough story to get past the gate. The characters are a more mature cast than in Alvarez's earlier novels, and there is a contemplative feel to the storytelling. An excellent addition to the canons of Caribbean literature and magical realism.

Truly a book for every reader.

One of our most formidable writers, this could well be the work to launch her into the stratosphere where she belongs. Household name stuff.

Repression Queen: A Memoir About Gender Transformation Erotica By Harper O'Neill Cover Image
$16.00
ISBN: 9798989744602
Availability: On our shelves now at one or more of our stores
Published: Harper O'Neill - February 1st, 2024

Repression Queen is a memoir, freckled with tg fantasy erotica short stories.
It’s not about gender transition, but what comes before it. It’s about men turning into women, and magic, and shame, and fear, and acceptance, and relationships, and privilege, and sex, and epiphanies, and addiction, and love. I’m grateful this book exists, for anyone who can relate to the feeling of not being at home in your skin.

Published: S&S/ Marysue Rucci Books - March 12th, 2024

Megan Miranda is at the top of her game with The Only Survivors. Ten years ago, a school volunteer trip ended in tragedy as all but nine students perished when the bus plunged into a raging river. Despite, or perhaps because of, their shared trauma, the "only survivors" have made an unspoken pact: to gather every year on the anniversary, to watch out for one another as their numbers dwindle, to never let outsiders know the horror of what they experienced that day. This year is different though, the cracks in their bond are not just internal, someone else knows their secrets and they are not alone
