Fifty Beasts to Break Your Heart: And Other Stories By GennaRose Nethercott Cover Image
$17.00
ISBN: 9780593314180
Availability: On our shelves now at one or more of our stores
Published: Vintage - February 6th, 2024

I will likely be recommending all of Nethercott’s books; her blend of folklore, fantasy, and real life makes you question whether the monsters in these pages may exist in your own life. Her magical collection of short stories kept me curious (in the way one might be curious what that shadow is lurking on the other side of a foggy bog). Each monster is inspired by past lovers and partners, some more devious than others…but all with the capacity to eat break your heart.

To Be Taught, If Fortunate By Becky Chambers Cover Image
$17.99
ISBN: 9780062936011
Availability: On our shelves now at one or more of our stores
Published: Harper Voyager - September 3rd, 2019

Ariadne is one of a four person crew on a mission to explore and study planets with the potential to harbor life. Partway through this decades-long mission, transmissions from Earth become spotty and then cease altogether. Far from home and without any guidance from mission control, Ariadne and her crewmates must make decisions that affect not only their own lives, but humankind as a whole. Chambers packs so much into just 176 pages: space travel, aliens, and queer astronauts set the stage for beautifully written musings about fate, humanity, and the nature of self-sacrifice.

Charming, intelligent, and emotionally adrift, Casey does her best to navigate life on the other side of 30. An aspiring novelist by day and a waitress by night, she grapples with the recent death of her mother, suffocating student debt, and a tricky love triangle. I loved this book so much that I tore through it at lightning speed and was then immediately devastated that it was over.

Availability: On our shelves now at one or more of our stores
Published: Avid Reader Press / Simon & Schuster - February 6th, 2024

Opening up this book was like joining Greta and Valdin's Russian-Maori-Catalonian family after all catastrophes have passed. I'm not down at rock bottom, but gradually climbing back up towards the sun with them, warming myself in their affectionate dysfunction.

These loosely connected stories exploring the lives of Arab Americans in their Dearborn Michigan community are pure lightning! A titanic survivor recounts a tale of lost love, a person juggles their secret identity with their traditional family responsibilities, and a man finds success in the unlikely world of audio book narration, or does he? These stories are fresh and exciting. Filled with Themes of family, otherness, and what it means to succeed. They are thought provoking and funny, but tender and joyful too. Just a lovely book.

Fishing for the Little Pike By Juhani Karila, Lola Rogers (Translator) Cover Image

$19.00
ISBN: 9781632063434
Availability: On our shelves now at one or more of our stores
Published: Restless Books - September 12th, 2023

An unremarkable fishing trip with nothing at stake! Gorgeous nature writing about real animals! Healthy relationships with high school boyfriends!

Well, no, but the nature writing really is one of the best parts of this book. Karila writes a wildness to summer in Lapland that is exquisitely beautiful, with weird locals that are as much a part of the sweltering landscape as the mythical creatures that are normalized amidst them. Also, I am a huge fan of books that are *simultaneously* a murder mystery, and this one does not disappoint!

Who Owns This Sentence?: A History of Copyrights and Wrongs By David Bellos, Alexandre Montagu Cover Image
$28.99
ISBN: 9781324073710
Availability: On our shelves now at one or more of our stores
Published: W. W. Norton & Company - January 23rd, 2024

Copyright. Oh boy. Everyone knows it, but do we love it?

Bellows and Montagu take us from its early days in London to the massive corporate tool it's become.

Especially relevant given the concerns around AI and art.
