Lucy doesn’t feel at home in Antigua or the states. Her relationship with her mother is painful but she can’t live without her. She’s running towards something but doesn’t know what. Jamaica writes with gentle, raw honesty about feeling like strangers in our homes. But Lucy is the answer; we build our own nests. I saw bits of myself through her, angry about the colonial histories of our native countries and how it plays into our wandering lost selves. Lucy might be unlikable to some, but that’s exactly why I love her so much.
